VLSI Lab Vision and Mission
| VLSI has strong presence in Israel industry for more than 30 years. Many of the world leading companies like Intel, IBM, Freescale, Infineon, Zoran among others, are handling key R&D activities in Israel. Many other Hi-Tech companies need also skilled VLSI engineers to put in silicon their IP. Intel and Tower Semiconductors have also Silicon factories in Israel. The providers of high-quality engineers to these ever increasing needs are the Technion, Tel-Aviv and Ben-Gurion universities. Bar-Ilan University decided to join this league and prepare graduate students to be leaders in this industry. The VLSI Lab started its activities on November 2008. In parallel to educating and training potential VLSI engineers, the Computer Engineering Group at BIU Faculty of Engineering is and will conduct research of advanced topics in the areas of architecture, logic, circuit and physical design, with emphasis on CAD, for state-of-the-art applications and in most advanced manufacturing process technologies. These factors are the source of many challenging research problems that research staff is targeting. Theoretical research in these areas is supplemented with Lab activities such as implementing and simulating the ideas of researchers, developing new design tools and flows in the area of VLSI CAD and implementing chips in silicon. Other departments of the faculty need VLSI design services for building their solutions and systems. We consider the VLSI Lab as a way to integrate the research activities across the faculty and provide computer engineering students more opportunities to gain design practice and exposure to other disciplines such as communication, networking and biology. There may be also interest in life and exact science faculties of BIU in using VLSI Lab for their research. |
