Noam Feldman, 24 from Beit Shemesh, a Master's student of Electrical Engineering at Dr. Shahar Alon's Spatial Genomics Laboratory, recently won a scholarship offered by the Ministry of Science and Technology to outstanding graduate and PhD students from the ultra-Orthodox sector in STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics).

“My research explores three-dimensional structures attained from cells of patients with brain diseases," she shares. "These three-dimensional structures, called organoids, mimic different aspects of the patients' brains. To date, mapping these three-dimensional structures from patients without breaking them down has been a nearly impossible task. I am developing technology that allows, for the first time, to accurately map these structures without dismantling them. This technology will enable us to measure variations between diseased and healthy organoids, providing a better understanding of the cause of the disease and which drugs can help. Organoids allow us to test hundreds of drugs simultaneously.”

How do you feel about the Faculty of Engineering?

“The Faculty of Engineering at Bar-Ilan is model example of innovation and creativity, coupled with emphasis on academic excellence. The support and guidance of the faculty and staff throughout the journey were an integral part of the learning process and the success of my research. I would especially like to thank my advisor, Dr. Shahar Alon, for his ongoing mentorship since my undergraduate studies, for his endless support, for pushing me to excel, and for believing in me throughout; to PhD student Alex Glick, for the collaborative work and for making every day in the lab a delightful experience. And finally, I wish to express my gratitude to the lab members who make the research period enriching and enjoyable.”
