Post Doc Times Two!
If you thought landing a good post doc fellowship abroad was hard, imagine if you had to find two of them! Merav and Yair Passig Antman met and were married when they were both graduate students at Bar-Ilan. Both went on to complete their PhD at the Alexander Kofkin Faculty of Engineering.
Merav, who holds a BSc and an MSc in Chemistry and Biology, joined Prof. Orit Shefi’s Neuro Engineering lab, where she constructed a system for effective and speedy rehabilitation of post-trauma neurons. Yair completed his MSc and PhD at Prof. Avi Zadok’s lab, where he studies sound and light interactions within optical fibers.
When the couple decided to advance their academic careers, they began searching post doctoral positions, enabling each of them to evolve in their respective fields. After nearly a year of searching for the perfect place, they were both offered a unique opportunity in New York.
Merav was accepted to the lab of Dr. Dan Heller, at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, where she is currently developing a sub-cellular resolution nano-sensor, aimed to detect neural activity and function.
Yair is working with Prof. Alex Gaeta at Columbia University, studying light and sound interaction in Nanophotonic devices with the objective of incorporating them in electronic chips. “New York offers a plethora of professional opportunities, excellent labs and fascinating symposiums,” share the couple. “We spend our Sundays on family outings and enjoying new experiences with our two children.” The family has also been warmly accepted by the local Jewish community. “We are both very grateful to our lecturers and mentors at BIU. Orit and Avi are our biggest supporters, to this day, and we are greatly indebted to them.”
