Computer Engineering: Bachelor's degree
Computing systems are a central component of modern life and are used in almost every area of life. They lie at the foundation of digital communication, economy, medicine, transportation, education, and security, enabling rapid information processing, efficient decision-making, and the automation of complex processes. Thanks to the development of large scale computer systems, it is possible to manage systems on a massive scale, connect people and organizations around the world, and develop new technologies at an unprecedented pace. The computing systems of the future will be able to operate fleets of drones, control robots, drive autonomous vehicles, and assist in medical treatment.
Computer engineers are those who conceive, design, develop, and build the various computing systems in our world. It is therefore pivotal that computer engineers possess broad knowledge of computer systems, along with deep understanding and the ability to specialize in specific systems. The goal of the Computer Engineering degree at Bar-Ilan University is to provide students with the winning combination of both. On the one hand, the program offers a comprehensive understanding of computing systems—from electronic circuits to complete networked systems; from modelling energy consumption on a chip to the mathematical theory that defining computations; from NAND gates to encryption. On the other hand, the degree integrates hands-on experience, laboratory work, a research project, and the choice of specializations during the third and fourth years, enabling each student to delve deeply into areas they find interesting.
Computer Engineering studies at the Faculty of Engineering at Bar-Ilan University combines theoretical knowledge with practical experience in advanced laboratories, while fostering problem-solving skills, creativity, and teamwork in multidisciplinary environments. The Computer Engineering program is aligned with industry needs and provides tools for integration into leading fields of the high-tech world. Students in the program benefit from close personal mentoring by senior academic staff, collaborations with leading technology companies, and uncompromising teaching quality.
Program objectives
The bachelor's degree program in computer engineering is a four-year program and is divided into two parts:
- The first two years are dedicated to the study of infrastructure subjects:
Sciences—mathematics, physics, computer science,
Engineering—linear systems, numerical systems, and electrical engineering. - Starting their third year, students take advanced courses classified into seven subfields within computer engineering, out of which the student ought to choose three. These seven specialties are:
- Cryptography and Cybersecurity
- Hardware and Chip Design
- Networks, Information and Quantum Computing
- Algorithms and Optimization
- Software Development
- AI and Data Analysis
- Signal Processing, Images and Graphics
