Electrical Engineering - Music
Combining Electrical Engineering with Music
In recent years, the realm of music has undergone profound transformations by integrating cutting-edge technologies into the musician's toolkit. Technological advancements have become inseparable from music's creative, performance, and production processes. Incorporating musical technology is pivotal in a musician's ability to engage with their audience. Simultaneously, the research domain in signal processing has increasingly delved into the intricate world of music, forging advanced algorithms for music processing, retrieval, and playback.
The intersection between electrical engineering and music has become an integral aspect of the daily lives of music enthusiasts across various genres and expertise levels. Advanced compression techniques provide instant access to favorite music, apps like Shazam facilitate song recognition, Pandora suggests similar tunes and tools like Bloom enable the creation of original music in preferred styles. Interactive software is a valuable resource for musicians at all skill levels, ranging from beginners utilizing programs for instrument learning to professionals employing virtual "note pages" that eliminate the need for page-turning during performances.
The collaborative efforts of the Faculty of Engineering and the Department of Music have resulted in a distinctive integrated curriculum. Graduates of this program will attain an "extended" degree in engineering and a "primary" degree in music, specifically in the music technologies track. As part of their academic journey, students must select the signal processing track within the faculty, and their final project in the signal processing laboratory will be a joint venture between the track and the music department, guided by faculty members from both programs.
In the music degree component, graduates will complete a "musical technologies" degree, providing comprehensive knowledge in music theory and history and theoretical and practical courses in acoustics, musical cognition, digital musical instrument construction, interactive programming for musical systems, studio production, and more.
Electrical engineering degree recipients will obtain a full-fledged degree in electrical engineering, granting them access to diverse industrial sectors and advanced degree pathways. Music degree holders will acquire a major in music, complemented by an engineering specialization, offering a distinct advantage in navigating the burgeoning intersection of music and technology and pursuing advanced music degrees, particularly in the recording field.
