Compact Integrated Thermal Sensors for Thermal Management in Microprocessors

תיאור הפרויקט ותכולתו:

Thermal sensors are used in microprocessors to prevent the IC from overheating and also to set the voltage level and fan control.  There can be large temperature gradients across the chip, so it is important to place sensors in many locations of a CPU to get accurate hot-spot information.  In modern CPU’s, there can be as many as 50 such sensors, so they must be very small.  Temperature is measured by measuring the Vbe voltage of a parasitic bipolar transistor, using an analog-to-digital converter.  Our BIU team presently holds the world record for the smallest BJT based sensor and we are continually trying to break this record.  This project entails improving the sensor by decreasing its size, while at the same time improving accuracy and lowering power.  The sensor will be designed in 65nm CMOS. The successful conclusion of this project may lead to an academic publication.
