Chip Measurements and Power Analysis
Every cryptographic algorithm which is used for encryption or decryption of communications "runs" on hardware. No matter how strong (mathematically) the algorithm is, once it is implemented in hardware there are some information leaks through side channels (such as power consumption) that may be attacked and exploited in order to retrieve the secret key and break the encryption. At the start of the next academic year, the EnICS labs will receive its flagship project's chip back from manufacturing. This chip incorporates high-end countermeasures against such attacks. The aim of this project is to perform real measurements on the chip, and run known power analysis algorithms in order to evaluate the performance of the countermeasures. This project involves working with lab equipment, design tools and running analyses in MATLAB or Python.
This project is open for both the Nano-Electronics students and Computer Engineering students.
