הרקע לפרויקט:

Optical fibers are an excellent sensors platform. They cover long reaches, easily embedded within structures, immune to electromagnetic interference, and suitable for hazardous environments. The detection of gamma radiation is critical for the safety of nuclear and other high energy power plants. Fibers serve in radiation sensing for decades.

The choice of fiber parameters in the context of radiation environments raises an inherent dilemma: A sensitive fiber will be degraded and ruined by radiation, whereas a resilient fiber will be a poor detector. Recently, our group proposed a novel approach for raising this tradeoff, using specialty fibers: The core of the fiber is standard and can withstand high radiation with little degradation in transmission. At the same time, the cladding of the same fiber can be made highly sensitive to radiation. Measurement protocols developed by the group enable the coupling of light between core and cladding modes of the fiber and the spatially distributed analysis of radiation exposure as a function of position.

מטרת הפרויקט:

The design, simulation, and testing of specialty optical fiber for the purpose of gamma radiation sensing.

תכולת הפרויקט:

The study of propagation of light in fibers; analysis of core and cladding modes in standard fibers; numerical analysis and solutions for modes in non-standard fibers; fiber design; fiber production (at external facilities); testing of fibers; mastery of experimental setups used by the group; experiments using fibers previously exposed to gamma radiation; critical discussion of results.
