Nuclear Detector Microscopy

High energy particles and fission products can be detected with flat plastic sheets which are etched to detect radiation damage, and then imaged in a brightfield microscope. These system are used in studies ranging from basic nuclear physics and cosmology to nuclear forensics. They are also extensively used for monitoring radiation exposure in the workplace.
The goal of this project is to determine the best way to read out these detectors. This  project will involve learning how these detectors work, and understanding the imaging process for these detectors.

דרישות:

Being comfortable with programming is helpful but not absolutely required. The main requirement is the ability to learn new material.

Even though this project is list in the bio-engineering track, it is very appropriate for other tracks -- especially electro-optics.
